I love everything associated with mowing the lawn.
It alerts my senses that Spring is here:
The unmistakeable smell of fresh grass clippings. The neat, orderly rows throughout the yard. The loud, whirring of the mower that can be heard throughout the neighborhood. The tender, soft grass in between toes and sticking to the bottoms of bare feet.
All these things bring to mind happy childhood memories of my dad mowing the lawn. I can picture playing outside on what seemed like an endless night. I imagine running through the grass in bare feet, often times with hair still wet from the bath and dressed in a nightgown, with my sisters and neighbors.
Now that I am a mother I enjoy the process of mowing the lawn even more.
This evening, while I sat on the driveway soaking up the last few rays of a setting sun and nursing my sweet baby, I got to watch my older two boys create memories of their own as they joined my husband in mowing the lawn for the first time this season. Short, chubby legs ran to catch up to him, Little Tikes lawn mowers, plastic buckets and shovels being dragged and left behind in the process. Squeals and giggles were just loud enough to be audible over the whirring mower.
Watching my family this evening, performing such a simple, routine chore, I felt very blest. My heart was full.

Linking up with Gina today:
Love this, Laura! I have similar childhood warm fuzzies attached to gras being mowed! My dad loved that time and instilled the same in us. My boys love watching my husband cutting grass but funny thing (but not too funny) he went to mow it yesterday because our grass has grown taller than ever and our mower wouldn't turn on. Womp womp! He's been trying to fix all day today. I think he's making progress but such a bummer! lol It's pretty brand new too. Beautiful share!! So glad I found your site through Gina :)
ReplyDeleteI agree with you as well... the smell of fresh cut grass...memories to be made. My girls liked making things from the grass clippings, art projects, fairy houses and more. :-) Enjoy!
ReplyDeleteBlessings,
Jill
OH I know exactly what you mean Laura! I have such lovely memories that come up when I hear the lawn being mowed too. And smelling that fresh cut grass = summer to me and feeling like I'm 10 years old all over again.
ReplyDeleteLove how our senses do that for us!!
Happy week to you my Dear! xo
I love the smell of freshly cut grass! It's refreshing in it's own way. :)
ReplyDelete:) What a beautiful, spring memory to hold on to! I love everything about it, and can't wait until we have our first chance to mow our lawn this spring. Just as soon as our backyard pond dries up... We have had a week of rain!
ReplyDeleteIt’s great that you and your family are making great memories through the little things in life, like taking care of your lawn. The way you described you memories with your dad is quite vivid, and brings about a nostalgic feeling. Thanks for sharing this with us, Laura. All the best!

ReplyDeleteI love the smell of fresh cut grass. I also have good memories of watching my father mow our lawn as a kid. I hope now that I am a father, I can give my children the same memory. In my opinion, there is nothing more calming than watching your parent cut the grass on a sunny and clear spring day.
